Old Stone

(Estonia, 2017)

The quarry in Rummu in north-west Estonia, not far from the Baltic coast, had been abandoned since the fall of the Soviet Union. Originally it operated as a limestone and Vasalemma marble quarry, and in the Soviet era manual labour was carried out by inmates drawn from Harku and Murru prisons situated next door. Since the final closure of the prisons in 2012, the site has been through a number of assessments for redevelopment. Currently the site is privately managed as a leisure facility in conjunction with the local community.
